Welcome
Dr. Papka specializes in the assessment of age-related dementias and adult cognitive disorders.
For adults, neuropsychological assessment may be warranted whenever there is a change in behavior or ability to perform daily functions. The cause of these changes may be known (e.g., due to an injury or medical condition), or unknown (e.g., some neurological or psychiatric illnesses). For children, a neuropsychological evaluation is warranted and helpful for the reasons above, and also if a child is not meeting developmental milestones, is having difficulty in school, is not able to maintain social relationships, or if a parent or teacher has some other
specific concern.
In all cases,
the purpose of the neuropsychological evaluation will be to characterize the existing impairment (if any), and help determine a diagnosis and treatment plan. Specific emphasis is given to developing interventions that allow patients to optimize their daily functioning and quality of life.
Psychotherapy is a recommended intervention for relieving stress and gaining understanding and control over one’s life. Dr. Papka works with patients of all ages and backgrounds utilizing a psychodynamic approach. Through talking and play (in the case of children), Dr. Papka provides a safe environment for releasing emotional energy and assists patients in meeting stated goals. Dr. Papka meets with patients individually, and also works with families, couples, and groups.
